Weingut Ernst Triebaumer calls its approach ‘green winegrowing’: unconventional, holistic and mindful of the world left to future generations. This outlook shapes its wines, how they are sold and the family’s way of life. The estate is based in Rust, in Burgenland’s Leithaberg wine region, Austria.
The family has been established here for three centuries. Ernst Triebaumer took over in 1971 and became a leading figure in Austria’s red-wine renaissance. His sons Herbert and Gerhard have run the estate since 2001. Photovoltaic systems provide renewable energy.
Twenty hectares span Gmärk, Mariental, Mitterkräftn, Oberer Wald, Bandkräftn and Vogelsang. Many slopes face the lake and receive both morning sunlight and reflected light. Northern sites are limestone-based; southern soils contain weathered mica schist, gneiss and quartz, with some clay.
Red varieties account for 75% of plantings: Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The remaining 25% comprises Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, Furmint and Traminer. Biodynamic practices began in the early 2000s; the original profile describes plans for Demeter-certified cultivation from 2023.
Sheep stay in the vineyards throughout the year, helping manage vegetation, trunk shoots, fertilisation and leaf removal. Artificial irrigation, synthetic fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides are avoided. Diverse ground cover and decomposed straw or reeds support humus, while mating disruption helps control grape moths. Physiologically ripe grapes are harvested by hand, with selection on the vine in up to three passes.
The flagship Blaufränkisch Mariental is made only in selected vintages—the profile notes its absence in 1995, 1996 and 1998. It matures mainly in new 300-litre oak barrels, with ageing extended to 22–23 months from the 2000 vintage. Other leading wines include Blaufränkisch Gmärk, Blaufränkisch Oberer Wald, Chardonnay Pandkräftn and Sauvignon Blanc Vogelsang.
Introduced in 2003, Tridendron blends Merlot, Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon; its Greek-derived name refers to the family name. Suitable years also yield Auslese, Beerenauslese, Ruster Ausbruch and Eiswein. Since 2009, the Urwerk range has offered wines without added sulphur dioxide from vines up to sixty years old. The profile reports annual production of around 100,000 bottles, approximately half closed with Vinolok, and membership of Cercle Ruster Ausbruch and Renommierte Weingüter Burgenland.
