The six-hectare Sultana estate traces its winegrowing history to 1877, when family founder Corrado Sultana began cultivating the local Nero d’Avola grape.
From 2000, Rosario Sultana and his wife Francesca Mauceri renewed the estate, planting Nero d’Avola, Syrah and Moscato. They built Cantina Burgio for winemaking, storage and bottling, and Cantina Triona for visitors, tastings and direct sales.
The fifth generation now runs the business: brothers Corrado, Giuseppe and Giovanni Paolo Sultana, united by a conviction that their land can produce distinctive, high-quality grapes and wines.
Pachino, at Sicily’s south-eastern tip between the Ionian and Mediterranean seas, is central to their identity. Winds, soils and climate support full ripening in a landscape steeped in history. Nero d’Avola has been grown here by the family for generations.
Their approach balances nature with careful human work. Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides and chemical products, combining inherited practices with scientific understanding. Grapes are selected and harvested entirely by hand, preserving the healthiest, ripest fruit.
They see nature as the principal author of the wine. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts from the grapes and surroundings, without chemical additives and with limited sulphite use. Wines rest in stainless steel for eighteen months to settle and mature naturally, followed by five to six months in bottle before release.
Each bottle seeks to tell the story of a family tradition that has evolved towards sustainable, natural production while remaining rooted in its place.
