Valli Unite began in 1981 when three young farmers chose to remain in Costa Vescovato, in Piedmont’s Tortona hills, rather than pursue city or factory work. They set out to revive shared livestock farming and sustainable agriculture in their home village.
The first cattle sheds were built from reclaimed materials for a cow-and-calf system. Soon the members’ vineyards were also managed cooperatively. Other young people joined this agricultural workers’ cooperative, drawn by its ideals and possibilities. Organic farming became a natural choice for protecting the environment and those working the land.
The cellar began moving towards natural wine in 2006. By 2013, all fermentation was spontaneous, with no added winemaking products apart from minimal sulphites, reported below 40 mg/l.
The cooperative participates in solidarity-economy networks that developed around the G8 protests, supports the NO TAV movement and raises funds through wine sales for initiatives including Mediterranea.
The original profile describes 23 worker-members and around fifteen employees, fifty Piedmontese cattle, 23 hectares of vineyards producing approximately 120,000 bottles, a hectare of vegetables, and eighty hectares of rotating lucerne, barley and wheat fields and woodland. Activities also include beekeeping, honey, a farm shop and an agriturismo with a sixty-seat restaurant, three small apartments and farm camping.
