In 2015, after working across Italy and Europe, Maria D’Acunto and Manolo Ghionna arrived in Grottaglie, the town of ceramics. Maria grew up in Cetara on the Amalfi Coast; Manolo is from Taranto, with roots in Grottaglie. Together they took over a small trattoria at the edge of the historic centre, in the old tanners’ quarter known as li cunzaturi, opposite the historic gate of Sant’Antonio Abate.

Their love of Puglia and its food and wine culture inspired them to make the trattoria an ambassador for the area. Traditional dishes receive thoughtful new touches, using seasonal ingredients, preferably organic, from small Puglian growers, producers and artisans. From the outset, their approach has reflected Slow Food’s principles of good, clean and fair food.

Signature dishes include Carpino broad beans with fogghie, greens or wild herbs, and Senatore Cappelli wheat orecchiette with Podolica beef ragù cooked in terracotta pignate. Serving food on traditional Grottaglie ceramics honours the town’s historic pottery district.

La Luna nel Pozzo joined Slow Food’s Osterie d’Italia guide and Cooks’ Alliance in 2020 and received the Slow Food Snail distinction in 2025. The original event profile also describes its role providing exhibitors’ lunches during the fair.
