Terre Grosse began in 1931 when Piero Toninato settled with his wife and seven young children in a farmhouse at Zenson di Piave. He knew its heavy clay soils—the terre grosse—from military service during the First World War. Leaving his native Meolo with little luggage and a determination to begin again, he planted new roots for his family in land scarred by war.

Five more children followed. Everyone helped with farm work, including Bellussi-trained vineyards and wine mainly supplied to local taverns. His son Alessandro turned that work into a lifelong passion, supported by his wife Odilia and their children Nadia and Diego.

Diego took over after his father’s death, improving the vineyards and cellar and planting local Raboso Piave, Raboso Veronese and the historic Grapariol, also known as Rabosina Bianca. His work became closely associated with the Terre Grosse name.

After Diego’s premature death in 2012, Nadia returned to continue his work, involving her children Nicola and Denise and daughter-in-law Linda. Their aim was to preserve roots and traditions while drawing on new knowledge to make the estate more sustainable.

Organic conversion began in 2015 and certification followed with the 2018 harvest. Caring for vineyards, protecting biodiversity and championing the Piave’s historic grapes remain daily commitments.

Their wines tell a family story of passion and exploration, sometimes against the current, combining enduring enthusiasm with new understanding.
