“Grapes contain everything needed to make wine. Nothing needs to be added or taken away.” This is the philosophy behind the artisanal work of Nico Mangione, owner of Tenuta Macchiarola.
The estate covers 19 hectares, six under vine, at Lizzano in Puglia, on the Ionian coast between Manduria and Taranto. Domenico, known as Nico, was a pharmacist before he began making wine in 2005. His first wine made entirely through a natural approach, in both vineyard and cellar, followed in 2011.
His wines ferment spontaneously. He relies on appropriate techniques and naturally occurring processes, with only minimal sulphite additions at bottling. Recognising low acidity as a major challenge in Puglia, he addresses it in the vineyard: yields are not pushed too low, leaves are removed early and again before harvest, and picking decisions place more emphasis on pH than on sugar levels. The result is lively wine in which the grape and its place of origin remain clearly recognisable.
