“For me, natural wine first means wine that tastes of something, with an identity that cannot easily be reproduced.” Salvatore Magnoni’s Primalaterra project is rooted in family land and memories of long childhood summers in Rutino, Cilento.
He planted a hectare in 2003 and another the following year, totalling 10,000 Aglianico vines with different clones and rootstocks. The first recorded bottles date to 2008. In 2012 he made his first fully independent harvest in a stone-and-chestnut cellar, without added sulphur dioxide. A third hectare of Fiano and Falanghina followed in 2018.
Vineyard treatments are limited to copper and sulphur. Depending on the year, he uses green manure or spontaneous grass cover and manure, mowing between and beneath the rows. Guyot pruning with two oriented spurs avoids large cuts back into the main trunk.
A few days before harvest he picks grapes and foot-treads them without destemming to prepare fermentation. Fermentation is spontaneous, without temperature control. Ten to fifteen days of maceration are followed by limited racking and frequent lees stirring. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in spring; filtration is minimal and coarse.
