Originally from Salento and now at home in Florence, Maria Chiara Perrone carries on her family’s farming tradition at Podere Trinci alla Fonte di Foiano, which the family has tended since 1600. This roughly three-hectare plot lies between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, among more than 1,300 hectares of vineyards in the Bolgheri area.
Passed down through the generations from Camilla Trinci to her daughters Carla and Clara Simonetti — Maria Chiara’s aunt and mother respectively — the farm now has around 300 olive trees and a one-hectare vineyard. That vineyard was the vision of Maria Chiara’s father, Pasquale Perrone, an agronomist and winegrower from Salento.
In 2003, Pasquale began his project with three aims: to restore the land’s original vocation, preserve its health and allow the plants to grow naturally. He believed deeply in the work, but died unexpectedly during the 2009 harvest, leaving his family without its guiding figure.
Life’s circumstances led Maria Chiara from her profession as a lawyer to a new identity as a winegrower. Her generosity, determination and ability to learn from daily experience helped her find her feet again and continue making an authentic wine, complete in its own character.
That wine is Carmina Arvalia, produced in just 1,500 bottles each year. Respectful, sustainable vineyard care yields healthy grapes, transformed with an artisan’s foresight. Indigenous yeasts, low sulphur dioxide levels, manual punch-downs and long ageing in stainless steel are essential to its making.
Year after year, the transformation from grape to wine preserves something spontaneous and elemental. The wine reflects the struggles, sorrows and joys of the woman behind it, revealing its character to those who take the time to listen.
Every harvest tells its own story. Each is a discovery that honours Pasquale Perrone’s vision and keeps alive the memory of the family’s ancestor Giovanni Trinci, known as Giannino. A respected wine taster and drinking companion of Giosuè Carducci, he was described by the poet as a ‘connoisseur of wine and a superb reveller’.
