Pietro Torti bears the name of Alessandro’s father, from whom he inherited the estate in 1990. The family has grown vines for generations around Montecalvo Versiggia, in Oltrepò Pavese, an area with a long winegrowing tradition and a strong reputation for Pinot Noir and sparkling wines. Croatina, Barbera, Pinot Noir and Riesling are central to the family’s work.
Ten hectares of certified organic vineyards combine newer, closely spaced plantings at 4,500 vines per hectare with older plots described as around forty years old, at approximately 3,000 vines per hectare. Compact clay and silt soils are low in organic matter and rich in potassium.
Grass has always been maintained between the rows. Fertilisation is minimal, and short Guyot pruning leaves at most ten to twelve buds per vine. Soil, exposure and climate support aromatic whites and structured reds with ageing potential.
“We must respect what the land gives us.” His father’s words underpin Alessandro’s approach, shared by his daughter Chiara, whom the original profile describes as studying oenology while working alongside him.
Organic matter, grass cover, copper and sulphur treatments, indigenous yeasts and limited sulphites are among the choices intended to preserve grape and terroir. Accepting nature’s challenges rather than standardising the results is part of making wines with personality.
Pietro Torti shares the vision of Evoluzione Naturale. Come and discover their stories and wines.
