Matrignano’s story began in 1962, when Alessandro Baroni bought the land, planted vineyards and preserved much of the existing olive groves. Covering around twenty-two hectares, it remains a family estate that combines its history with a modern outlook and a commitment to natural farming and wine.
Six hectares of vines lie mainly on the south-western side of the property, divided into around ten plots with different varieties, elevations and ages. All are farmed organically, using sulphur, copper and horsetail macerate to protect against downy and powdery mildew.
When the current growers took over the vines in 2017, they faced the legacy of years focused on maximum yields, followed by abandonment. They restored the vineyards with new posts and wires and a gradual, considered approach to pruning, bringing attention back to fruit quality and varietal character. Sites range from 250 to 400 metres, with vines trained to spur-pruned cordon or Guyot.
Their natural approach continues in the cellar. No yeasts are added, fermentation temperatures are not controlled and sulphur dioxide use is kept low, with total levels in bottle reported below 12 mg/l.
They believe that good natural wine starts with careful vineyard work, targeted pruning and selection at harvest. Only healthy, ripe grapes enter the cellar, where indigenous yeasts are given the time they need to turn sugar into alcohol.
