Luigi Fersini established his farm in 2015 to take over the family vineyard, previously rented to a local winery. The approximately eleven-hectare block at Sogliano Cavour, near Lecce, is certified organic and grows Negroamaro, Montepulciano and Primitivo.
Luigi makes wine from only part of the harvest, selling the rest to local producers. He wants the wines to express grape, place and the weather of each vintage, without being ‘perfected’ in the cellar.
He sees himself first as a farmer. His own tanks are housed in a local winery, where he personally oversees winemaking, leaving him free to focus on vineyard care rather than running a cellar facility.
He likes his vines to look free: uneven shoots after spring pruning, lightly held by wires, leaves of different sizes and tufts of grass around the trunks, as though the vineyard were happily tousled.
