La Ginestra was founded in 1978 by a group of young people determined to preserve and renew the farming traditions of the Tuscan countryside. The cooperative began on a long-abandoned farm in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, taking its name from the broom bushes that covered the uncultivated land.

Through decades of shared work, its members restored fields, woodland and homes. The farm now covers 125 hectares, with arable crops, olive groves, pasture, woodland, livestock and beekeeping.

Organic farming, adopted in 1989, reflects the members’ commitment to soil fertility and environmental care. Since 2011, biodynamic principles have also informed its approach to regenerative agriculture.

The 5.11 hectares of vines include Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot, Colorino and Canaiolo, used for the estate’s table wine and La Ginestra Chianti. Winemaking is artisanal: spontaneous fermentation, no intrusive fining or filtration, and minimal sulphur dioxide.

Rather than bringing together separate farms, the cooperative is one agricultural community whose members both own and work the land. Its activities support one another: farm-grown cereals provide green manure, livestock supply compost, and ongoing experimentation informs vineyard work.

Shared knowledge shapes the cellar, from winemaker Dario Nocci’s experience in France and Australia to Alessandro Bicchi’s work combining biodynamics, natural farming and new agronomic techniques.

La Ginestra shares the values of Evoluzione Naturale. Its wines express the landscape of Tuscany and the community that cares for it.
