La Carcaia was founded in 2005 by Pier Francesco Galassi, his sister and cousins to manage land inherited from their grandmother Vittoria. They began by making a tiny amount of wine for family use from vines already more than a century old.
Production gradually increased with new plantings, bringing the vineyard area to three hectares. Pier Francesco and his sister now own the business, while he carries out all vineyard and cellar work.
His degree in agricultural sciences helped him develop environmentally considerate vineyard practices. He has always kept winemaking aids to a minimum. The original profile also describes a small experimental skin-contact wine made without any such aids.
