Silvia Giorgetti’s Il Gelso Moro is in Morro d’Alba, an important winegrowing area in the Marche. Local red varieties include Lacrima, Montepulciano and Sangiovese, while Verdicchio plays the leading role among the whites.
The estate began in 2004, growing out of a longstanding love of the land and nature, supported by university studies and further learning. Organic farming was the starting point, guided by the belief that quality, environmental care and respect for health belong together.
In 2005 a new south-east-facing vineyard was planted with the area’s three principal red varieties. The vines are Guyot-trained at a density of 6,000 per hectare. The clay and limestone soil is nourished with green manure and biodynamic preparations rather than fertilisers. Vineyard tasks are carried out directly by hand, with machinery reserved for working the soil.
Disease prevention relies on copper and sulphur, permitted in organic agriculture, while weeds are managed by mechanical soil cultivation and mowing. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand in October, then vinified at a third-party winery.
Winemaking respects the fruit and its natural transformation. Fermentation is spontaneous, using yeasts on the grape skins, with limited metabisulphite use and no chemical additives or corrective agents. Fermentation takes place in concrete or stainless steel; maturation uses the same vessels, with a small proportion in wood, followed by further bottle ageing.
