For Matteo Santoiemma, I Parieti is a story of stones, families and love. The stones form the dry-stone walls, or parieti, that surround and protect the vineyards. His maternal and paternal families weave together different callings and traditions. Love for the Murge, first felt in childhood and rediscovered as an adult, led him to reclaim his roots and personally manage his grandfather’s land and masseria.
Based in Gioia del Colle, the farm grows and processes its own grapes, olives and cereals. Matteo tends bush-trained and trellised Primitivo, Verdeca, Minutolo and other native varieties, seeking their most authentic expression.
I Parieti is both an agricultural and cultural project, making products that resemble a landscape whose potential remains partly unexplored. Its outlook is rooted in local history rather than the standardisation sometimes pursued in the name of modernity.
Winter green manure and organic preparations nourish the soil; small amounts of copper and sulphur provide plant protection. The aim is optimally ripe grapes that can be made into wine without corrective products or winemaking additives.
Each vineyard is managed according to its soils and varieties. Harvest takes place between September and October, by hand into crates in the early morning. Grapes are processed promptly on arrival at the cellar, with spontaneous fermentation supported by a pied de cuve.
All wines use screwcaps to limit oxidation, reduce sulphites added before bottling and avoid cork-related problems.
