Azienda Agricola Garro Antonio was founded in 2016 in Sant’Andrea di Conza, in Alta Irpinia on the border with Basilicata. Antonio inherited an Aglianico vineyard planted in 1968 and set out to make wines deeply rooted in its terroir, balancing tradition with care for nature.
Certified organic farming and low-impact practices support the estate’s commitment to biodiversity and the local landscape. Antonio describes an approach without chemical inputs in either vineyard or cellar. Pruning, tying and harvesting are all manual. Carefully selected grapes are collected in crates and brought to the cellar within hours, preserving their integrity.
No winemaking additives are used. Indigenous yeasts on the grapes initiate spontaneous fermentation in large chestnut vats, without temperature control. Daily hand punch-downs and long macerations give the wines structure, depth and intense colour. No sulphites are added during production or bottling; the estate reports total sulphur dioxide below 10 mg/l.
The wines mature in stainless steel and then in bottle, developing firm but balanced tannins and a character that expresses both Aglianico and its origins. Antonio’s aim is artisanal wine in which the grower guides nature without overpowering it, allowing each vintage to tell its own story of Alta Irpinia.
