Fognano is in the municipality of Bobbio, in the province of Piacenza. Bobbio won Italy’s ‘most beautiful village’ award in 2019 and lies in the Trebbia valley, described in a saying attributed to Ernest Hemingway as ‘the most beautiful valley in the world’.
The estate takes its name from the hamlet where Paolo Foppiani’s family has owned farmland for around 150 years. Vines have always been part of the farm, continuing a valley tradition associated with the monks of Saint Columbanus, who settled here from AD 614 and spread their influence across much of northern Italy.
Until 2016, the family made wine only for its own use. In 2017 Paolo and his wife Giovanna decided to vinify their entire harvest using natural methods. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1990 and include Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Ortrugo, Barbera, Bonarda and Dolcetto.
The estate describes 2.5 hectares of established vineyards, with approximately five additional hectares planted in 2020–2021, introducing further native varieties. The plots lie at elevations of 250–400 metres on predominantly marl and limestone soils.
