Fabio Ferracane’s first cellar memories date to the age of fifteen, helping his father make wine for family use. In the 1990s, most grapes from the family’s three inherited hectares were sold to other Marsala wineries. Fabio later studied viticulture and oenology and gained experience in cellars in Italy and abroad.
His studies helped him understand fermentation, but he found his identity in the vineyard rather than in adjusting wines in the cellar. He tends the vines, selects fruit and tastes berries to decide when to harvest, then makes wine as naturally as possible.
He now works five hectares. Authenticity means expressing Marsala through attentive farming. Copper and sulphur treatments are limited and chosen according to rainfall and vineyard humidity. In difficult years, careful bunch selection prioritises quality over quantity.
All fermentation is spontaneous. Some wines receive very small sulphite additions before bottling and temperature control during fermentation, a choice Fabio considers useful when Sicily’s August and September temperatures reach 35–40°C. Other wines are made without either added sulphur dioxide or temperature control. Decisions change with each vintage.
“My wines tell of a passion for slow cultivation and the uniqueness and beauty of the place where I live.”
