Enoliti Botanici brings together professional herbalist Lorenza with Pietro and Giuseppe, whose backgrounds are in hospitality and natural wine. The project is based in Scicli, near Ragusa in south-eastern Sicily, on the Mediterranean coast facing Africa.
The range pays tribute to women’s role in preserving and passing on herbal knowledge. Each label honours a female figure associated with a different culture or tradition.
Enoliti are herbal wine infusions, historically known as medicated wines or wine tinctures. The project draws inspiration from a tradition associated with Hippocrates, in which wine was used to extract compounds from plants. This historical medicinal use is part of the makers’ inspiration, rather than a statement of the drinks’ therapeutic effects.
In their workshop, the team uses cold maceration without added pure alcohol, sugar or other processing aids. Daily punch-downs and tastings track extraction in each batch, allowing the variation characteristic of artisanal production. They select natural wines from small growers in Sicily and beyond.
Recipes develop through ongoing research into old herbal formularies and carefully chosen botanical combinations. The organically grown plants are cut for herbal infusions and dried in a static oven.
Herbal wines have long been part of Mediterranean culture. In Sicily, fresh Artemisia was traditionally used to flavour wine; in northern Italy, including Piedmont, enoliti preceded modern vermouth.
The makers suggest serving Enoliti Botanici after a meal. Depending on the grapes and botanicals, they can also be enjoyed as an aperitif or used in cocktails and punches.
