Colle San Massimo is a small farm on the Adriatic side of Abruzzo, tending a vineyard planted in 1968 and a centuries-old olive grove. Facing south-southeast between the sea and the central Apennine ridge, the vineyard enjoys plenty of sunshine and air.
In 2005, the owners decided that keeping the vineyard in cultivation meant making the wine on the farm. That decision led to work in the fields, the renovation of the old farmhouse and improvements to bring the cellar up to standard. The resulting space allows them to welcome visitors and handle both the grape and olive harvests, which often overlap. New rows planted in 2019–20 brought the vineyard area to around one hectare.
The gently sloping, southeast-facing vineyard benefits from breezes from both the sea and the mountains. The grapes are picked by hand at the right stage of ripeness and vinified with great care. Intervention is kept to a minimum in the vineyard and cellar, allowing each season to leave its mark on the wine.
The cellar is part of the farmhouse, just a few hundred metres from the vines. Traditional methods rely on little machinery and plenty of manual work, from punching down the cap to operating the lever press. The must ferments in the original concrete tanks and in fibreglass vessels. The wines are clarified through racking, with only minimal sulphite additions.
