Cataldo Calabretta is the fourth generation of a winegrowing family. After graduating in oenology and viticulture from the University of Milan’s agriculture faculty, he worked at several wineries before joining his sisters in restoring the old family cellar and beginning a new chapter.

The estate has followed organic principles for more than ten years. Renewed vineyards continue the cultivation of Gaglioppo on hillsides in the heart of Cirò DOC. No selected yeasts or fermentation activators are used. Sulphur dioxide, static cold tartaric stabilisation and pre-bottling filtration are kept to a minimum. Restored concrete vats provide a traditional setting for the wines’ maturation.

The estate’s emblem is the arciglione, the traditional pruning billhook of Cirò’s growers. It represents centuries of local skill and the human contribution to terroir: land, climate, grape variety, work and responsibility towards the surrounding environment.

Cataldo remains fascinated by experienced pruners at work, responding to each vineyard’s vigour, soils and climate, and to the wine they hope to make. This is how he imagines his own wines: cellar work as the natural continuation of daily care in the vineyard.

Cataldo Calabretta shares the vision of Evoluzione Naturale. Come and discover his stories and wines.
