Castelsimoni grows vines at Cese di Preturo, around eight kilometres from central L’Aquila. Its project explores mountain viticulture at 800 metres, choosing early-ripening varieties able to tolerate low temperatures: Pinot Noir for red wine, aromatic Traminer and Riesling Renano. Marked temperature changes contribute to the wines’ character.
The cellar is cut into rock close to the vineyard and equipped with modern winemaking tools. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts rather than added selected strains, seeking to preserve the grapes’ expression in this unfamiliar setting instead of reproducing standard varietal styles.
Sulphur dioxide is used very sparingly, requiring meticulous cellar care. Wines are not filtered; natural cold and time help them settle. Patience is considered essential to quality.
The estate believes in the potential of high-altitude winegrowing and its distinctive conditions. “In a land devastated by an earthquake, we can and must keep hoping to make this wonderful natural landscape at the foot of Gran Sasso shine again.”
Castelsimoni shares the vision of Evoluzione Naturale. Come and discover their stories and wines.
