Maurizio Donadi, creator of Casa Belfi, began Casera Frontin in 2016 with his wife Fabiola. The project is based in Frontin, a hamlet of Borgo Valbelluna between the Belluno Prealps and the Piave river, and holds deep personal and professional meaning for them.
Drawn by its peace and biodiversity, they planted vines at 450 metres alongside old fruit-tree varieties. Pinot Grigio grows with fungus-resistant PIWI varieties Bronner, Johanniter, Solaris and Aromera. Their tolerance of downy and powdery mildew can reduce the need for vineyard treatments.
Maurizio studied oenology at the University of Padua. His personal approach draws on Steiner’s ideas, biodynamics and holistic practices, including homeopathy and music in the vineyard. Proud to be a farmer, he describes himself as a caretaker of the earth.
He believes healthy, resilient vines are the foundation of complete, long-lived wines. His natural-wine philosophy centres on avoiding chemical inputs, earthmoving, pesticides, selected yeasts, filtration, fining and additions or removals in the cellar.
