Musician and grower Ennio Romano Cecaro compares wine to rock and roll: formal training is not everything; the emotion it creates matters most.
Inspired by Raffaello Annicchiarico’s wines, Ennio and his wife Mena began in 2011 with two hundred bottles in her grandfather’s cellar. Both came from families with three generations of winemaking. Their first released vintage was 2012, and Canlibero was formally established in 2014.
They follow organic practices without certification, using only copper and sulphur in the vineyard. Fermentation is spontaneous, with no fining, filtration or added sulphur dioxide. Exchanges with like-minded growers, common sense and the seasons guide their learning.
Their dog Brando appears on the label, free of a lead, reflecting the freedom they seek in their wines. Two hectares include an established vineyard at Turrumpiso in Torrecuso, supplying Aglianico, and several small clay-and-limestone plots with different expressions.
