Calafata began in Lucca in 2011 with an unlikely idea from friends who had neither land nor farming experience: revive abandoned farmland while creating employment for people facing disadvantage and marginalisation.
With help from local biodynamic growers and guidance inspired by Alex Podolinsky, they restored three hectares of historic vineyards on the Maolina hills, including century-old vines.
The project grew. Vineyards now cover around ten hectares, alongside olive trees, bees, apple trees and a large vegetable garden. Fresh produce is sold at local markets or made into preserves, jams, soups and fruit juices.
