Brigante Lucano raises semi-free-range Suino Nero Lucano pigs and produces artisanal cured meats from this local breed.

The farm covers twenty hectares of oak and Turkey oak woodland and Mediterranean scrub near the medieval village of Vaglio Basilicata, in the upper Basento valley. At the foot of Monte Cenapora, 860 metres above sea level, this unspoilt landscape holds a history stretching back millennia: a place of worship dedicated to the goddess Mefitis and an important meeting point between Magna Graecia and Rome.

The animals roam and graze freely, feeding on roots, acorns and wild plants. Their diet is supplemented with cereal and legume meals, maize and bran, alongside natural spring water. Daily care centres on their welfare and their relationship with the surrounding environment.

Carefully hand-selected ingredients, experience, love of the land and dedication to their work underpin cured meats still made by traditional artisanal methods. Few ingredients and simple tools are used, with no added preservatives. Time, patience and the easterly winds do the rest.

“Ours is a love story with an ancient flavour. We look to the future by learning from the past and preserving traditions passed down through millennia.”
