Camerlengo is based in Rapolla, next to Barile in the Vulture area of northern Potenza province. Vulture is an extinct volcano; Antonio Cascarano, the man behind Camerlengo, is anything but inactive.
Antonio’s story is one of returning to his roots. An established architect in Rome, in 2001 he decided to revive the farm founded by his grandfather Giovanni.
Over the years he has restored some of the old vineyards. Today he makes natural wines with a clear aim: to bring out the full potential of Aglianico del Vulture through natural farming that respects the land and the environment.
Antonio farms four hectares of vines, divided between a vineyard around 25 years old on very dark volcanic soils and a younger one on clay-limestone soils. His grandfather, Giovanni Falaguerra, used to say: ‘Black grapes in black soil, white grapes in white soil.’ Following that principle, Antonio planted most of his Aglianico on volcanic ground and his white varieties on the limestone slopes of the Toppo vineyard.
The cellar is a cave carved into the rock, where stainless-steel vessels stand alongside fine chestnut vats.
