Raised in a rural family that had worked the land for generations, Alex Della Vecchia returned to farming after a successful career in commerce. He describes the work as demanding, but rewarding and stimulating.

His vineyard was planted in 2010 in the Belluno Dolomites. Alex and his uncle Giannino Tormen recognised the potential of its gravelly, calcareous sedimentary soils and local climate, drawing on knowledge passed down by his grandfather. Earlier family farming combined vines for home consumption with other crops, under sharecropping arrangements that lasted until the mid-1970s.

Alex aims for a productive, ecologically balanced farm with a largely closed cycle: vines alongside fruit, vegetables, cereals, legumes and livestock. His plans include local Alpagota, or Pagota, sheep, a breed associated with a Slow Food Presidium.

The wider project celebrates local food and wine culture through distinctive wines that carry cultural meaning as well as the pleasure of sharing.

Alongside the family farm, Alex helps manage Costadilà, continuing Ernesto Cattel’s approach to bottle-refermented wines from native Treviso varieties. Their meeting was important both professionally and personally, opening a path of learning about environment, biodiversity, history and identity.
